Mother Earth Meditation
Have you ever considered how deeply connected your physical body is to the planet beneath your feet? Annie Shearer's guided Earth meditation takes you on a transformative journey that reveals this fundamental relationship in ways both scientific and spiritual.
"We are intersecting cycles of water, earth, air and fire." This powerful insight anchors a meditation experience that's perfect for Earth Month but valuable any day of the year. Annie guides us to recognize how our blood, lymph, and tears mirror Earth's waterways; how our bones and tissues are literally made from soil and rock; how our breath mingles with the planet's own respiratory cycle. Through gentle guidance, she helps us feel these connections physically, not just intellectually.
The meditation progresses through a careful body scan, connecting us first with our physical form before expanding outward to recognize our place within Earth's systems. Annie draws from Buddhist teacher Joanna Macy's wisdom about our impermanence and interconnection, then leads us through sensory explorations that ground these concepts in immediate experience. Her visualization of being like a tree—reaching tall with aspirations while firmly rooted in Earth—provides a striking metaphor for balancing ambition with stability in our daily lives.
What makes this practice especially valuable is its accessibility. Taking just twenty minutes, this meditation can transform your relationship with the planet and yourself simultaneously. It offers a way to "fill your cup" through connection rather than consumption. Ready to discover what happens when you truly listen to the Earth? Join Annie for this simple yet profound practice and experience groundedness that stays with you long after the meditation ends.

Speaker 2:Welcome, friends, to this guided earth meditation. Thank you so much for being here. My name is Annie Shearer. I am a meditator and a yogi and a big fan of our planet, so I thought it would be great to share a Mother Earth meditation with folks, and I thank Gia Raquel Rose for inviting me to do this. Really, my inspiration to record an Earth meditation is thanks to Gia Raquel, so thank you for joining me. And it's a beautiful month of April of 2025.
Speaker 2:Considered earth month, earth day is April 22nd. So, because of these recognitions, I'm happy to be here to intentionally connect to the earth with all of you and to do an earth meditation. It's such a beautiful spring time of year, a time of abundance and rebirth and renewal, so good time to start a meditation practice if you haven't already. I'm grateful you're here. I'm grateful to the earth on this beautiful Earth Day. So thank yourself right now for taking a few minutes out of your busy schedules to be here and do something positive for you. So deep bows to taking the time out.
Speaker 2:Um, I love to set my intention before meditating, and gia's theme for this month is urging us to fill our cups, which is so important. I'm on board. It's challenging to give ourselves permission sometimes to take time out and take care of ourselves, so I invite you all to do that each and every day. I suggest starting with an earth meditation every day, 10 minutes. It can change your perspective and get you grounded and centered for a great day. Let's make wellness a number one priority, and I really do feel the earth is here to help us. I love to use the earth to inspire my meditation practice every day. Earth to inspire my meditation practice every day. So as I start this day, I'm setting my intention for groundedness, centeredness, connection to this earth that I'm so grateful for. Feeling centered, I'm ready to face my day with the earth energy behind my back.
Speaker 2:So let's everyone get into a comfortable position, a posture where we're relaxed yet alert. We have a connection to the earth. We have a connection to the earth. You may meditate inside or outside. On this beautiful spring morning, I'm sitting outside on my patio, but you might try this inside today and think about where you might want to sit tomorrow. Bring this recording and try this outside tomorrow, tomorrow. The intention is to connect to the earth, so having some visual representation of Earth close by is highly recommended.
Speaker 2:So I trust that you've found a comfortable position that supports your body in a way that makes you feel grounded, rooted, centered. You may sit in a chair with your feet firmly planted on the floor, where your back is well supported. Your hips, your legs do what's best for you be comfortable, yet alert. You want your mind to not get lazy, but alert and mindful of your surroundings. So let's take three slow, deep breaths together.
Speaker 2:After three deep, grounding breaths, how is everyone feeling right now? How's your body feeling? Let's connect to our body, check in, do a mental scan. Start from your head, move down through your head, down through your neck, your body organs, torso, hips, all the way down your legs to the tips of your toes. Do you feel any sensations anywhere in your body? Feel a sensation and focus on it. Can you feel, envision blood pumping through your body, through your organs processing constant energy? Let this body scan acknowledge our precious human form in the present, here and now, in this moment, from your forehead to your eyes, ears, nose, mouth, throat, down through your torso, organs, bones, each limb that supports you.
Speaker 2:Joanna Macy, a teacher of mine systems scholar and a Buddhist teacher, says everything we are comes from the living, sacred body of earth, every element of our bodies and the air we breathe and the food we're going to eat. So it's time that we recognize that and know we're impermanent. We're as impermanent as ripples in a lake and bubbles in a river. We are intersecting cycles of water, earth, air and fire. That's what I am, that's what you are, that's what I am, that's what you are. Water Water is in our blood, lymph, mucus, sweat tears. Our inner oceans are tugged by the moon and the tides. Our cells float in fluids that stream through our veins like rivers. Fluids wash and nourish the endless river ways of gut and capillary in our bodies. Moisture pours in and through and out of you, out of me, into the vast hydrological cycle.
Speaker 2:The earth, our bones and matter are made from rock and soil, from earth. The earth pours through us, replacing each cell in our body every seven years. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. We ingest, incorporate and excrete the earth. We're made from earth. Feel that connection to the earth, the gravity that holds us here. That doesn't happen on other planets. We inhale, we exhale, the planet inhales. The planet exhales Oxygen, kisses each cell. Awake Adams, dance in an orderly metabolism, breathe the universe in and out.
Speaker 2:Again, give gratitude to the earth for these elements that make up this precious human form, for for our life, for all the miraculous life surrounding us, the mystery of the seasons, the cycles, rebirth and many miracles to delight in, to bring happiness in the moment. You can look to nature and there it is. Notice the birds singing, especially on a spring morning. Notice the bees buzzing, how they pollinate, how they make honey. It's all a miracle. We can learn so much from the earth. So taking time to observe closely, just listen, can provide answers to maybe some tough questions we're grappling with. The problem takes you away, get in your head.
Speaker 2:I like to imagine I'm like a tree that reaches tall with all my goals and aspirations, but I am firmly planted, with very strong roots that extend deep into the earth. Those roots are stable, provide stability. They center me, reassure me that I am held closely and connected, that I am held closely and connected strongly to this planet. Imagine that my roots are weaving around and among the rocks. They touch the underground springs. My roots are pulling sustenance of the earth from the earth into me, making me feel nourished and strong. Earth support comes to us through all of our senses, all of these portals in our bodies that bring the earth to us and really into us.
Speaker 2:I open my ears. I hear the birds. I hear the stream. I hear the stream. I hear the faint purr of automobiles. What do you hear? I open my eyes, I see all the new life in the green around me. I see some baby critters, some bird eggs, some baby deer fawn the other day, more worms in the dirt. What do you see inspires you? I open my nose, smell the sweet flower, floral background. The dogwood trees are out there, the apple blossom trees. I smell some pollen, some fresh new grass. What do you smell? I feel my skin feet on the patio. Look where I have a blanket in between.
Speaker 2:Pay attention to where your body touches the ground and feel the earth giving you strength and nourishment, pulling up from the earth through your roots, up through your legs, your hips, into your torso, up through your chakras, starting at your root chakra, your grounded root chakra, our primary focus for this meditation and from that grounding the base of your spine, your earth. Earth sustaining you, energizing each chakra your second sacral chakra, the third chakra, your fourth chakra, the third chakra, the fourth chakra 5, 6, 7, 8. The earth supports your body, the earth is your home. Feel it. Just as you are feeling rooted in your body, your body is rooted towards the earth. It's a reciprocal relationship. Now just simply rest on the earth for a few moments with open awareness, Feel grounded, feel connected. Feel connected.
Speaker 2:Thank you all for being here to close this meditation. Please give yourself gratitude once again for this time of meditation practice. May it benefit you throughout your day. I thank you for being here and I hope you're feeling more grounded and centered as you go about your day. I thank you for being a bright light on this planet. I encourage you to use nature to inspire a grounding meditation practice any chance you get. Happy Earth Day everyone. Have a great day.
